Howard Gosling achieved a Joint Honours Degree in Biology and Chemistry from the University of Wales and this was followed by a period of Graduate Apprenticeship (2 year ‘cooks tour’ included) whilst in employment with a large engineering company where he studied for a Higher National Certificate in Mechanical Engineering with Industrial Admin A & B Endorsements and subsequently attended, on Day Release, Lanchester College where he gained a Diploma in Management Studies.

There followed a period in Management Consultancy and this, in turn, in the hot UK summer of 1976 brought him into the water treatment business troubleshooting at a company specialising in swimming pool water treatment and manufacturing and distributing the necessary specialist chemicals. As a Member of the Royal Society of Chemistry and the Chartered Institute of Biology, he quickly became a source of advice when problems arose and joined various industry Standards committees helping write the Standards on pool and spa water treatment. In the mid 1980’s the domestic spas (now called Hot Tubs) grew in popularity and Howard Gosling became involved in writing the initial UK SPATA Standards which remain almost unchanged to this day (www.spata.co.uk). In 1987 following the stock market crash, he left that chemical wholesaler company in order to set up his own business as a swimming pool chemical supplier and advisor and was soon elected as SPATA representative on the Pool Water Treatment Advisory Group(www.pwtag.org) where he helped co-author the Pool Water Guide published in 1995 and then in 1996 sold his pool water chemical business to Certikin International (www.certikin.co.uk) and joining them as Director of Water Treatment. He founded SPATEX Ltd (www.spatex.co.uk) in spring 1996, a conference and exhibition company where he remains a Founder Director.

During the years at Certikin International he was co-author of the Swimming Pool Water Book and helped re-organise the Trade Associations in the UK under the British Swimming Pool Federation (http://www.bspf.co.uk) Early in the new Millennium he left Certikin International to set up www.poolandspaadvice.co.uk with Certikin International as his first client, which they remain. At this time he became involved in BISA (British International Spa Association) dealing with the hygiene aspects of traditional spa treatments and this in turn led to becoming modular author of Water Treatment for the SQA (Scottish Qualifications Authority) new syllabus for Spa Therapists. He was also invited to become a Member of the London and Three Counties Water Group of the Health Protection Agency at Colindale and later became a Member of the Spa Working Group set up by the HSE/HPA to produce Management of Spa Pools (Publications Department, Health Protection Agency, 61 Colindale Avenue, London NW9 5EQ or http://www.hpa.org.uk/publications/2006/spa_pools/default.htm).

Howard Gosling was elected a Fellow of the Royal Institute of Public Health in 2007 (now Royal Society for Public Health www.rsph.org.uk ).

Howard Gosling was Chairman of the Pool Water Treatment Advisory Group from 2007 – 2010 (see www.pwtag.org) and works as an author, lecturer and trainer in specialist recreational water treatments as well as being an Expert Witness in the preparation of court statements etc specialising in Legionnaires’ Disease and Cryptosporidium. In March 2009 at the International Pool and Spa Conference the new book, Swimming Pool Water, Treatment and Quality Standards for Pools and Spas was launched (ISBN 0851 700 766), the culmination of 5 years co-authorship. Expert Witness work has involved
investigations in the UK and abroad including, Majorca (Cryptosporidium), Hong Kong (Avian Flu), Turkey (E.coli 0157 causing renal damage) and most recently hair entrapment. These have been for a wide variety of Lawyers and Tour Companies.

After some experiences in both Equine and Canine Hydrotherapy, Howard has further developed a one day course in Canine Hydrotherapy which is recognised by City & Guilds.
During 2002-3 he has also trained as an Accredited Mediator with CEDR where he helps prevent expensive litigation (www.mediator.gb.com). Any dispute can be mediated. He has mediated successfully including settling cases involving sums well into six figures.

Howard Gosling is also a Department of Transport certificated Dangerous Goods Safety Advisor (DGSA). He was consulted by the Home Office over the Explosive Precursor Regulations 2014.

Howard Gosling only ever works for a fee and does not sell water treatment disinfection products and thus provides impartial Independent Advice.
